- Catherine Deveny is an Australian TV comedy writer, columinist, and a standup comedian.
- Anzac Day, April 25th, is a day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand for those who served and died in wars.
- Deveny has been critical of Anzac Day for some time. In 2010, she was fired from her 9-year job at The Age after making her opinions known. In recent years, she has said: "Anzac Day. A celebration of a society so f---ed up it saw no other option than to go to war. Kill, r-pe and invade. Then glorify it."
- She's also known for her comments toward a then-11-years old Bindi Irwin in 2010. She wished that the daughter of the late Steve Irwin would "get laid." Catherine was fired from Fairfax Media as a result.
- Days before this year's Anzac Day, Deveny began her rants on her social media accounts.
- She believes that war veterans didn't "serve" Australia, and that they are "ignorant and uneducated."
- Catherine later said: "Why do people in the armed forces use the word 'serve' to describe their work despite it being no more dangerous or prone to upheaval than many other jobs?...It's just a job and work. Throw the term 'serve' in the bin... It's part of the fetishisation of war and violence."
- She said that the following jobs are as equally dangerous as serving in the military: Firefighters, paramedics, police, doctors, social workers, nurses, window cleaners, miners, arborists, labours, farmers, construction workers, people who work with those suffering severe mental illness, prison officers, roofers, teachers (in American schools), loggers, fishermen.
- Deveny also called Anzac Day "Bogan Halloween."
- Her views have been met with vitriolic response, including being threatened with sexual assault.
- Many others criticize Anzac Day, too.
One of the thing that ANZAC day brings up is the hilarious notion that Australians have fought for our right to free speech. Australians do not have the right to free speech. Australians who have worked in the violence industry have fought wars to suck up to the US and British.
